Adult Education Services

The mission of Reid State Technical College Adult Education Program is to change lives through education by helping individuals reach their full potential. The program will provide Adults with the opportunity to improve academic skills, literacy skills, life skills, essential skills, and prepare for the GED test. By assisting students with improving their skills, students will gain the needed skills for the workforce and transition into a career or postsecondary education program. The mission will be accomplished through individualized, computer based and group instruction. All students will be encouraged to set goals appropriate to their potential.

Class Component

Reid State Adult education classes provide a second opportunity for adult learners committed to improving their academic and life skills.  Instruction is based on individual student needs and may range from one-on-one tutoring, group discussion, teacher presentations, classroom participation, as well as, individualized learning using computer software programs. Teachers provide the learner with materials and individual help to learn on his/her own level.

TABE tests are used to determine initial educational functioning level, advancement to another educational levels, and readiness to take the GED. Instruction is offered “FREE OF CHARGE” to enrolled learners. Classes are conducted on a year-round basis Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at various locations.

Time Frame

The time required to prepare for the GED test varies based on the length of time one has been out of school, the highest grade completed in high school, the amount of time spent studying and the rate of pace of academic achievement. After completing the required tasks set forth in the class, including the Official GED Practice Test, learners may take the GED for FREE.

Registration

Registration for the Adult Education Program takes place on a continuous basis. It involves the candidate’s participation in three activities:

1. GED orientation.

2. Participation in an interview with the teacher: In this interview, educational goals are discussed.

3. Participation in assessment activities: In most cases, the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) is administered to the adult learner. The results of the test are used to help set learning goals and to help the teacher and the learner to cooperatively develop the Individual Plan of Instruction (POI), which serves as a guide to learning activities.

High school drop outs age 17 or younger are acceptable contingent on meeting the required guidelines. (Contact AE Director). 

Attendance

All adult learners are expected to be regular and prompt in attendance. The program generally follows the same schedule of holidays, opening date, and closing date of Reid State Technical College, but on some dates the schedule may vary.

Non-Traditional High School Diploma Option (HSO)

The Non-Traditional High School Diploma Option (HSO)is an alternative to the GED high school equivalency, designed for students who have completed all of the required credits for graduation but failed the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE), or students who have dropped out of the traditional high school setting.

This program provides two options:

Option 1 – For an adult who attended an Alabama high school and earned enough credits to graduate, but did not pass the high school graduation exam.

Option 2 – For an adult who earned 10 or more credits from an Alabama high school and requires additional credits for high school completion.

Employment Training:

Workkeys Certification and Preparation

Many industry and business employers require a standard employability test called WorkKeys. This certification exam covers work skills Applied mathematics, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents. Free preparation classes and testing are offered through Reid State Adult Education Program.

Career  Readiness

Pre-employment and job skills training are offered through Reid State Adult Education Program.  Students are provided training in Resume writing, job interviews, problem solving, time management, conflict resolution, communication skills and team work.

Computer Skills Training

Computer skills training is individualized, self-paced instruction on the basic computer skills required for most employers.

Career Pathways

Career Pathway is a series of connected education and training programs and student support services that enable individuals to secure a job or advance in a demand industry or occupation. Career Pathways focus on easing and facilitating student transition from Adult Education to community college or employment; from high school to community college; from pre-college courses to credit postsecondary programs; and from community college to university or employment.  Students enrolled in this program will gain certificates, stackable credentials, and degrees in demand occupations.

Bridge Program

The Bridge Program is a boot camp design for students who have taken the ACCUPLACER test and did not score the required score needed to enter into Reading, Math or English core class.  This Program is offered each semester to NEW students only, who have made application to the College.
