Pharmacy Technician

Reid State Technical College offers a 12-week, self-paced Pharmacy Technician course designed to provide flexibility and support. With required attendance once a week on Wednesdays and an optional Math Lab available on Thursdays, this program ensures that students can balance learning with other commitments. Upon completion, students will be prepared to register for the national certification exam, though it's not mandatory for employment as a Pharmacy Technician in Alabama. Earning the certification, however, is highly recommended as it enhances career opportunities and serves as a valuable professional credential.



Classes Begin on January 13th, 2025.

Requirements:

· Must have a High School Diploma or GED

· Must be 18 years of age or older

· Must have a Gmail account

· Must achieve a minimum 8.5 Reading grade equivalency on the TABE test

Course Overview:

This comprehensive, non-credit program is designed to prepare students for a career as a pharmacy technician in retail or various other pharmacy settings. Additionally, it provides the foundation needed to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam.

Course Content:

The program covers key topics such as pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, and the role of pharmacy practice across different environments. Students will learn pharmacy calculations and measurements, how to read and interpret prescriptions, and the identification of drugs by both generic and brand names. Through a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “Top 200 Drugs,” I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic techniques, sterile product handling, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), prescription dispensing, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement procedures.

National Certification:

This program meets the necessary requirements for students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Certification Opportunities:

Upon completing the program, students will be eligible to take nationally recognized certification exams, which are essential for entry-level employment in this rapidly growing field.

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity:
